Bruce Beresford: At last, making the film that obsessed me for 30 years
Because there, at the very end, there was a lovely arch, on which was written in curly letters Model Gowns. Written by a superb novelist of contemporary manners, The Women in Black is a fairytale which illuminates the extraordinariness of ordinary lives. The women in black are run off their feet, what with the Christmas rush and the summer sales that follow. With the lightest touch and the most tender of comic instincts, Madeleine St John conjures a vanished summer of innocence.

Madeleine St John, The women in black

A number became journalists, quite a few became actors John Bell, the most acclaimed and several have published memoirs — not novels. Les Murray and Clive James emerged as major poets and Robert Hughes became internationally known as an art critic, while the loquacious and dynamic Germaine Greer became world-famous after the publication of The Female Eunuch in

The Women in Black
Madeleine St John was impressed by Hugh Jackman's performance in a production of the musical Oklahoma! As her biographer, Helen Trinca, writes in Madeleine , an Australian friend that year found the expat author "hostile to Australia, a terrible snob and judgmental", perhaps more so since her novel The Essence of the Thing was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in and lost to The God of Small Things by Indian author Arundhati Roy. She died in London in aged 64 after a lifetime of smoking. Film director Bruce Beresford, a friend from their student days at Sydney University, says, "I suspect she'd have driven everyone mad over the adaptation and the lyrics". However, she was "thrilled" by his request to make a film based on the novel after Clive James praised it as a comic masterpiece. Barry Humphries loved it too. After many years' delay, Beresford and co-producers Sue Milliken and Allanah Zitserman hope to shoot the film next year.
Her maternal grandparents were Romanian Jews. She married Christopher Tillam, a filmmaker, with whom she moved to San Francisco to live while he studied film. She took a series of jobs in bookshops and offices.
