The South Australian Government has said it will begin removing domestic violence perpetrators from their houses to allow their victims to remain in the family home, where safe, as part of a trial. The Government is opening 40 new domestic violence crisis beds over the next 12 months, including a small number of beds for perpetrators to use while removed from their home.

They will be placed in alternative accommodation, with access to support services, while domestic violence victims will be able to stay in their own homes if it is safe to do so.

Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink hopes the move will mean victims are able to stay in their communities and support networks. The trial will allow authorities to explore what interventions might work to change perpetrators' behaviour. Authorities said contracted supported services would conduct a risk assessment to decide whether an accused perpetrator was suitable for a funded bed. Ms Lensink said victims knowing where the accused was and that he or she was getting help was important for victims.
